Solunska Glava is the most remarkable alpine object located in the central part of the country, on the mountain Jakupica. In fact, Solunska Glava is the highest pick of the mountain Jakupica, with altitude of 2540 m. The rocks on Solunska Glava are posed in a shape of amphitheater over the source of the river Babuna, wide of about 5 km. and height of 1000 m. They are known as Nezivoli steni (Nezilovi karpi).
There are two distinctive parts on the rock: one more massive and more compact “juzna karpa” (south rock), and the other one “istocna karpa” (eastern rock), divided with several rock notches, so called “heads”, first, second, third and fourth (seen from South to North). The length of the rock is from 200 up to 1000 m. The shorter lengths are mainly in the left part, “eastern rock”, and the longest is the rock in the central part, “southern rock”. The length of the eastern rock goes from 200 to 450 m. The grindstones and SIPARITE that divide the rock reach almost to the top edge of the rock. The southern rock (Mokar kamen) is the longest one with about 1000 meters. In the middle it is divided by a representative grindstone which divides the rock in two sections, in the top part. The right part is very exposed, mostly with slick rocks. The left side is considerably cracked and marked with inclined cracks and well formed cliffs. This part of the rock, in direction of the steep grass hillside, joins with the pick Solunska Glava. In the base of the rock, there is a big reddish pillar (Crveniot stolb – The Red pillar), but there are also parts where the SIPAROT begins high in the rock, which reduces significantly the whole rock into lengths of about 350 meters. The most characteristic place of this kind, in the middle part, is the so called Crven kuloar (the Red corridor). By its composition, the rock is a limestone with additional substances (brown-red color), which characterizes it as a crumble rock. The crumbliness varies on different parts of the rock and the central part is the most compact.
The best starting point to the rock is the mountain house “Ceplez”, which is placed at altitude of 1445 meters. The road to get there is a bad (ground) road from the village Bogomila (50 km south-east of Veles), through the village of Nezilovo or the village Papradishte. By vehicle you arrive at the mountain house in about 1 hour from Bogomila. Another way to come to the mountain house is by foot. You take the train to the train stop Oreshje (first stop after Bogomila), you continue on the marked road for the village Nezilovo, and then you take the marked mountain path to the mountain house Ceplez. There is a 3 to 4 hours walk to the house. The best accommodation is in the mountain house Ceplez, with a capacity of about 50 beds and it’s open during the whole year.
The approach to the rock from the mountain house Ceplez is not simple and there are two basic options, but you can get more information with the host of the house. The first approach is through the river source of Babuna, then long the central canyon above the source, through a quite wild area, surmounting difficulties of second and third degree. Then you get to the bottom of the amphitheater under the rock. Necessary time for this approach is 3 to 5 hours. The second approach is long the marked path to the pick Solunska Glava, and you make ABZEL from the top edge of the rock. The place for ABZEL is at the end of the plateau, where the last climb for the pick begins. The ABZEL line is with expansion bolts and there are 6 lengths with 60 meters of rope. The time and length for this approach are shorter than the previous.
The best climbing period for this locality is from the beginning of June till the end of September.
